By downloading, accessing, or using the Afterword iOS app and this website (the "Service"), operated by the maker of Afterword ("Afterword", "we", "us"), you agree to these Terms of Service and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
Eligibility
You must be at least 13 years old (or the minimum age required in your country) to use Afterword. If you are under the age of majority where you live, you may use Afterword only with the involvement of a parent or guardian.
Your account
You need an account to use Afterword. You can sign in with Google, with Apple, or with your email address. You are responsible for activity that happens under your account and for keeping access to it safe.
Earlier versions of Afterword let you start as a guest. A guest account lives on your device until you secure it with Sign in with Apple; if you lose the device without securing the account, that data may not be recoverable.
The Service
Afterword helps you bring in books and highlights and turns them into recall cards, quick daily reviews, and reflections. Some features use AI to generate cards and to transcribe voice notes. AI output can be wrong, incomplete, or surprising. Afterword is a study aid, not a substitute for the original works or for professional advice, and we do not guarantee any particular learning outcome.
Subscriptions and billing
Afterword offers a free tier and a paid subscription, Afterword Pro, available as monthly or annual plans and sometimes with a free trial.
- Subscriptions are sold through the Apple App Store and billed to your Apple Account. Payment is charged at confirmation of purchase.
- Subscriptions renew automatically unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. If a free trial is offered, any unused portion is forfeited when you purchase a subscription.
- You can manage or cancel your subscription, and view auto-renew settings, in your Apple Account settings. We do not control and cannot directly process refunds; refunds are handled by Apple under its policies and applicable law.
- The free tier may include limits (for example, on the number of books). We may change features, limits, and pricing on a forward-looking basis; we will give notice where required.
Your content
You keep ownership of the books, highlights, notes, reflections, and other content you add to Afterword ("Your Content"). You grant us a limited license to host, store, process, and display Your Content solely to operate and provide the Service to you. This includes sending highlights to our AI provider to generate cards and sending voice recordings to a transcription provider, as described in the Privacy Policy.
You are responsible for Your Content and for having the rights to use it, including any highlights or excerpts you import from books and other sources.
Acceptable use
Do not misuse the Service. In particular, do not: break the law or infringe others' rights; attempt to disrupt, reverse engineer, or gain unauthorized access to the Service; or use the Service to store or share content you have no right to.
Intellectual property
The Afterword app, its name, design, and software are owned by us and protected by intellectual-property laws. These terms do not grant you any rights in them except the limited right to use the Service.
Third-party services
Afterword works with third-party services such as Apple, Google, Supabase, our AI providers (Anthropic and OpenAI), Open Library, and, if you connect it, Readwise. Your use of those services is governed by their own terms and policies, and we are not responsible for them.
Disclaimers
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that AI-generated content will be accurate.
Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Afterword will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, profits, or goodwill, arising from your use of the Service. Our total liability for any claim relating to the Service will not exceed the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or USD 50.
Termination
You may stop using the Service and delete your account at any time from within the app. We may suspend or terminate access if you violate these terms or to protect the Service. Provisions that by their nature should survive termination will survive.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date and, where appropriate, notify you in the app. Continued use after changes take effect means you accept the updated terms.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Netherlands, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules. If you are a consumer, you also keep the benefit of any mandatory protections of the law of the country where you live, and nothing in these terms limits those rights.
